São Luís Declaration: a Joint Statement from Engagement Groups to the G20 States on Artificial Intelligence

Sep 19, 2024

On Tuesday, September 10, the G20 engagement groups C20, L20, T20, and W20 celebrated the launch of their joint statement, the São Luís Declaration: Artificial Intelligence.

The Joint Statement is the result of months of studies and reflections. Its name is due to the city of São Luís, in Brazil’s northeast region, where two meetings when it comes to AI took place: the Digital Economy Working Group, in June, and the AI Summit: Bridging Boundaries, also in June. The latter was a T20 official side-event, organized by CEBRI, Data Privacy Brasil, CEWEB, and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung.

The Declaration aims to bring together responsible and effective strategies for Artificial Intelligence within the G20 structure. The common ground established among the engagement groups in launching the declaration reflects the growing necessity of discussing artificial intelligence.

Among the points highlighted by the Declaration, it is possible to find insights from Decent Work to Meaningful Inclusion and Climate and Social Justice. These concerns are reflected alongside the rising influence of AI on key areas of G20 countries, such as the economy.
